What Is Bamboo Viscose? A Simple Guide to the Soft Fabric in Wide-Calf Socks
Bamboo viscose is a soft, smooth fabric made from bamboo pulp. The pulp is dissolved and spun into fine fibers, which is why the finished fabric feels silky and cool rather than woody. You will also see it called rayon made from bamboo or simply bamboo fabric. It is popular in socks, sleepwear and anything worn close to the skin all day.
In short
- What it is: viscose (also called rayon) made from bamboo pulp.
- How it feels: soft, smooth and breathable, with a light, cool touch.
- What it is good for: pieces you wear for hours, such as socks.
- How to care for it: wash gently and let it air dry.
What bamboo viscose is
Bamboo viscose starts as bamboo, a fast-growing plant. The plant is turned into pulp, the pulp is dissolved, and the liquid is pressed through tiny openings to form long, fine fibers. Those fibers are spun into yarn and knitted into fabric.
Because the fiber is formed this way, it comes out smooth and rounded. That smooth surface is the reason the fabric glides over the skin instead of rubbing.
Bamboo viscose, rayon and bamboo fabric: are they the same?
Mostly, yes. The words describe the same family of fabric from slightly different angles:
- Viscose is the name of the method used to make the fiber.
- Rayon is the general name for this kind of fiber in the United States.
- Made from bamboo tells you which plant the pulp came from.
On a fiber-content tag the full wording is usually "viscose made from bamboo" or "rayon made from bamboo". In everyday conversation most people shorten it to bamboo fabric or bamboo socks.
What bamboo viscose feels like
This is where the fabric earns its fans.
- Soft from the first wear. The smooth fibers give a silky feel with no scratchy break-in period.
- Breathable. Air moves through the knit, so the fabric feels light instead of heavy.
- Comfortable in warm weather. It takes up moisture and lets it go again, which helps the fabric feel less damp during a long day.
- Smooth under clothing. It drapes closely, so it sits flat under trousers and dresses.
Bamboo viscose compared with cotton
| Bamboo viscose | Cotton | |
|---|---|---|
| Feel | Silky and smooth | Soft and matte |
| Weight | Light, with a fluid drape | A little more body |
| Moisture | Takes up moisture and releases it | Takes up moisture and holds it longer |
| Care | Gentle wash, air dry | Easy care, tolerates more heat |
Neither is better in every situation. Cotton is a sturdy everyday classic. Bamboo viscose is the one to choose when a soft, cool feel against the skin matters most.
Why bamboo viscose is blended with stretch fibers
On its own, bamboo viscose has very little stretch. Socks need to stretch and then return to shape, so the yarn is knitted together with elastic fibers. The bamboo viscose gives the softness you feel. The stretch fibers give the fit, and in compression socks they also provide the gentle hug.
Why Movira uses it for wide-calf compression socks
Compression socks are worn for many hours, so the fabric against your skin matters as much as the fit. We chose a bamboo fabric because it stays soft and breathable from morning to evening.
Then we built the fit around wider calves:
- Sizes L–4XL, made for calves up to 25 inches.
- Gentle graduated compression, 15–20 mmHg, for everyday wear.
- A soft top band designed to stay in place without digging in.
- Four colors: black, navy, grey and beige.
- A 60-Day Fit Guarantee.

How to care for bamboo viscose socks
The fiber is a little more delicate when it is wet, so gentle care keeps it soft for longer.
- Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle. A mesh laundry bag helps.
- Use a mild detergent. Skip bleach and fabric softener.
- Air dry. High dryer heat is hard on both the softness and the stretch.
- Do not wring them out. Press the water out and lay them flat or hang them.
Having a few pairs to rotate means each pair has time to dry and recover its shape between wears.
FAQ
Is bamboo viscose the same as rayon?
Yes. Viscose is a type of rayon. Bamboo viscose is rayon made using bamboo pulp, so the two names describe the same fabric.
Is bamboo viscose soft?
Yes. Softness is the main reason people choose it. The fibers are smooth and fine, which gives the fabric a silky feel from the first wear.
Is bamboo viscose breathable?
Yes. The fabric lets air through and takes up moisture, so it tends to feel light and comfortable over a long day.
Does bamboo viscose shrink?
It can shrink with high heat. Washing cold and air drying keeps the size and the softness.
Is bamboo viscose stretchy?
Not on its own. In socks it is knitted together with elastic fibers, and those provide the stretch and the fit.
